Windows 10 problems
Windows 10 issues

Windows 10 has a lot of problems bugs and issues that Microsoft refuse to fix or intentionally integrated in Windows 10

-- Windows 10 search works only if it have internet access. I found that Windows 10 search stops working if there is no internet access for long time. This means that all user search strings and search results are silently sent to Microsoft for processing and analyze.

-- Windows 10 enters infinity loop when it tries to get folder size. I never waited to see if it will end because it was enough for me that it counted folder size greater than physical disk size. After that I used my copy tool talent copy to evaluate real folder size and it reported 12GB for same folder

-- Windows 10 task manager don't report correctly running processes. I found that task manager in Windows 10 is displaying as running tasks that are closed and doesn't display processes that are running. I am sure that there is problem because process causing this issue has loaded CPU to 80% and it is running or not, can be detected by CPU fan speed. Also when process is closed Windows 10 task manager shows that it is loading CPU by 80% while full CPU load in same time is reported as about 5%. When process is running but not shown in Windows 10 task manager CPU fan speed is high and full CPU load is about 80-90% but sum of load caused by listed processes is about 5%.

How to update firmware of Seagate HDD
Step by step simplified instructions for safe firmware update

At first find if there is new firmware for your Seagate hard drive by visiting Seagates download page here: https://apps1.seagate.com/downloads/request.html

Download firmware to your local hard drive and extract archive content.

Connect empty USB thumb drive to free USB port of your computer. If there is some data on your USB drive it will be deleted

Open folder called bootable tools and run USBbootBuilder executable.

Select your USB thumb drive from dropdown menu and complete wizard to create bootable drive need for firmware update on Windows. On Linux you can run firmware update utility from your system drive, but better create bootable drive and run from there.

After USB boot drive is created copy both files(.lod and .CFS) from firmware folder to main folder of USB thumb drive.

Reboot and press F11 or whatever is your hot key that opens boot menu and boot from USB thumb drive.

on boot it is auto performed SeaFlashLin -i

Because in Linux filenames must written with upper caps in order to run you should know exactly how must be written name of feaflashlin executable file.
Because this file is not in folder where you are send on boot execute command df
This command will list all files and you will see exact name of seaflashlin

Name if the seaflashlin should me written exactly as shown by df command using upper and small caps.

Execute following command to see what will happen
seaflashlin -k filename.SFC
where filename.CFS is CFS file from firmware folder that you copied on USB drive.
This command will not update firmware but will show you what file on what drive will be written. If you have few HDDs better disconnect all HDDs except HDD you want to update firmware

If possible before to perform real firmware update use UPS to supply your computer in order to escape risk of power supply issues

To perform real firmware update you should write following command
seaflashlin -c filename.CFS
This command will perform action shown by previous command and will update firmware of connected HDD

You can use directly .lod file but it is not recommended for if you are not sure what to do.
Using .CFS file check all files and connected HDDs and update firmware only if firmware is for your HDD

All should work as I described above but updating firmware of your HDD is on your own risk and I am not responsible if something goes wrong

Back to basics - Windows returns to DOS and say hello to NSI and CIA

Based on Windows 10 preview I can say that peak in Windows trend was Windows 7 and now Windows is going back to DOS.

In Windows 10 preview even reasonable features of Windows 8 are removed but all bad features are kept firmly

Mouse for Microsoft obviously is some useless device obviously they are not holding mouse patent and this why they are so angry on it.

Obviously most command on Windows 10 will be performed without use of mouse and this is why there is option to replace command prompt with powershell.

New features of Windows 10 are requested by CIA, NSI/NCC and so on agencies that are acquiring personal information to identify people.

Cortana is such service. It collect info for user voice, analyze it, and then agencies can recognize everywhere person that was so imprudent to use it.

Of course webcam and microphone are always turned on to allow agencies to have pleasure to know who is walking and what is talking, and all files and web pages are sent to them as part of smart screen and file screen functionality. This is why upgrade to Windows 10 will be free. They want more people under full controll

In this plan I suggest Microsoft to tattoo users foreheads with Windows 10 product key

Of course Windows 10 upgrade will be free because it is already paid by NSI and CIA

Intel GMA and OpenGL games on Windows 7 issue fix
Intel GMA, OpenGL, Games, Windows 7 problem fix

I tested on Windows 7 Intel Atom CPU with Intel GMA 3150 integrated into CPU and I found that there is problem running OpenGL games if Windows 7 is running Windows Basic theme. For example Counter Strike 1.6 (CS 1.6 )does not display main menu and only sound from menu item is heard when mouse is moved. Other example is Quake III Arena, where screen stays white but if mouse is move there is sound from menu buttons.

If Intel GMA 3150 is running on Windows 7 with theme that supports Windows Aero, then all OpenGL games runs normally and all is visible. If problem still exists then make sure that in game video settings color depth is set to 32 bit

Intel GMA+ Windows 7 + Windows Aero + OpenGL games (+ 32bit color depth) = OK

Intel GMA+ Windows 7 + Windows Basic + OpenGL games = Problem

Tutorial On How To Move Windows Special Folders / User Folders with “Special Folders Manager”
move special folders (user folders) windows 7 / windows Vista and up

Windows operating system has a lot of so called “special folders” that are folder which are registered in Windows and have special designation. Registration of special folders in Windows allows to computer programs running on computer and Windows itself to find them regardless where they are located. For example this allows to computer software programs to know where exactly is located “Program Files” folder. or where are placed files you store on your desktop no matter on which drive is installed windows or which version of windows you are using. On 64bit Windows systems when you install some computer software program its installer make request to Windows for location of “Program Files” folder and Windows return different path depending whether it is 32bit program or 64bit program and this is why 32bit programs install themselves in “Program Files (x86)” folder while 64bit programs install themselves in “Program files” folder.

Windows user folders are part from Windows special folders

Special folders in Windows have different designation and can be grouped in 3 main functional groups:

– special folders that are related user data like “My Documents”/”Documents” folder, “Desktop” folder, “Pictures” folder, “Saved Games” folder, “Contacts” folder and so on

- special folders that are related program settings like “AppData” folder and its related folders

-special folders that related to Windows operating system like “Windows” folder, “Program Files” folder, “System” folder and so on.

Special folders from first 2 groups – user related and program settings related can be moved to other locations and you can use this option to me vet ham on non-system drive.

When you move special folders outside Windows system drive you get following benefits:

- You can reinstall windows and format Windows system drive without to lost your personal data or program settings
- by moving special folders that can be moved on other disk drive or partition you free space on Windows partition to install more applications on it
-moving special folders on other drive or partition allows you to use smaller volume partitions that can be managed easier, that means you can search faster to defragment drives faster to scan for viruses faster and so on
-separating data on different partitions and drives will increase overall system performance

“Special Folders Manager” allows you to move special folders on Windows Vista and Windows 7 with easy. “Special Folders Manager” works as on 32bit Windows versions as well on 64bit Windows versions and it is free for personal use.

“Special Folders Manager” for now have only portable version that means you do not need to install it on your hard disk drive and can run it directly from thumb flash drive. Languages in which “Special Folders Manager” is available at the moment are English and Russian languages

Before to start “Special Folders Manager”, it is important to make system restore point and to close all open programs.

For now you will need to choose correct location from where to run “Special Folders Manager”, but I am planning to make it automatic.

I recommend you to copy “Special Folders Manager” to root folder of some of your hard drives (C:\, D:\ and so on), external thumb flash drive or “Program Files (x86)” folder.

When you run “Special Folders Manager” Wizard you will see welcome screen

Special Folders Manager - Welcome

Do not forget to make restore point and to close all programs before to continue!

Click on “Move Special Folders” button to go to first step in “Special Folders Manager” wizard

REDIERCTING

Special Folders Manager - Redirect

In redirect special folders screen by default are listed only per user folders because they do not require administrator privileges in order to be moved and because they contain folders that would interest most users. If you want to see and common folders, check “List Common Folders” checkbox.

Before to continue to next step you should mark folders you want to move. After you select all folders you want to be redirected, you should click on “Get Size” al left pane to get their size. Getting folders size can take time depending of size of selected folders. If after that you mark more special folders and click on “Get Size” this will get size only of these folders that size is still unknown. You can use sort options to order folders

Special folders that are marked in this step will redirect windows to looks them on new location when this wizard is completed.

When you are ready, click on “Next” button to go to next step.

COPYING CONTENT

Special Folders Manager - Copy

In this screen are listed only folders you have selected in previous step. Now you must select folders content of which you want to be copied to new location. By default all special folders are marked. This option is for advanced users only and you should not make any changes here. So leave all folders checked and click “Next”.

NOTE: If you still have not got folders size you should do it not in order to continue to next step. Advanced users can cheat wizard by getting size on just one folder that will allow them to go to next step without to have all folders size. This hole must be used only by experienced users. Other users must get size of all folders marked to be copied before to continue.

MOVING / DELETING

Special Folders Manager - Delete / Move

NOTE: This option is only for advanced users! Other users must click next without to make changes in this step!

WARNING: If you move folders you will not be able to use restore option! There is no reason to restore folders to their original location on system drive, but it is mandatory to warn you

In this step of “Special Folders Manager” wizard you can specify which of folders that will be copied to new location, you want to be deleted. This means that content of folders selected here will be moved to new location and space they take on old drive will be freed. Old content will be deleted after folders are successfully copied. This option is not available for folders that are not marked to be copied in previous step and their checkbox is grayed.

Here you can check folders to see their summary size that will be freed on source drive after they are moved, but do not forget to uncheck them before to continue, if you do not want to move them. If you do not know what to do and have enough space on source drive (usually system drive), better uncheck all and let “Special Folders Manager” wizard to copy folders content instead to move it.

DESTINATION LOCATION

Special Folders Manager - Bad Location DriveSpecial Folders Manager - Good Location Drive

In this step you must select on which drive you want to move special folders. Here are listed all fixed hard disk drives except Windows system drive. Drives by default are sorted by free size available on them. When you mark some drive, its size indicator and parameter are changed to show you how it will loks after folders content is moved on this drive. If there is enough free space to holds all data drive space indicator becomes green and you can continue. If there is not enough space, drive space indicator becomes yellow and you will need to select other drive or will not be able to complete “Special Folders Manager” wizard and to move folders.

When you select appropriate drive click “Next” button to start special folders redirection process.

STATUS

Special Folders Manager - Status

After special folders redirection process finish you can see status for each folder redirection. Special folders that are successfully redirected according to your requirements are selected, and special folders that redirection is failed are not selected. You can use sort by path option to sort special folders in way convenient for you to see which folders redirection is failed. If there are successfully moved folders exit button becomes “Log-off” button because in order to complete special folders redirection you should log-off first. Advanced users can close “Special Folders Manager” wizard without to restart by clicking on close button located on top-right on windows, but other users must click on “Log-off” button to log of immediately and to complete redirection process.

HINT: If you would like to move different groups of special folders to different hard drives you should run wizard few times.

NOTE: Some special folders may not be listed in “Special Folders Manager” redirection screen, if your system administrator have been disabled them for moving using system policy. You can see that these folders are available on your system by using “List All Special Folders” option

More information about "Special Folders Manager" including movie and download link can be found in software section of my website. To open “Special Folders Manager” home page click here: “Special Folders Manager Home Page”

NOTE:After you reinstall Windows use Special Folders Manager again to set Windows to use user folders on drive where you have pleced them on first time when you have moved them with Specail Folders Manager. After that you will see all of your files as you never reinstalled Windows - all will be there in same place and nothing will be lost

How to save and restore your internet web browsing session in IE, FF, Safari, Opera web browsers
save browser session / restore browser session

If you want to learn how easy, quick and simple is to save custom browser session at any time and next to restore any of previously saved custom browser sessions at any time you need it, then read next.

It is not required any additional software program or browser plug-in / addon in order to save browser session, because this is native web browser feature.

All current web browsers like Internet Explorer(IE), Firefox(FF), Safari and Opera, supports save browsing session and restore browsing session features.( Of course stupid google chrome browser is not capable to save or restore internet browsing sessions.)
This allows you to save many internet web browsing sessions and later to restore one or any of them.
If you use a lot of tabs to open many web pages simultaneously then you probably would like to save / store web pages from all tabs (this is your browsing session) for future use. You can then safety close your web browser without to worry that your internet browsing session will be lost and you will not be able to find all open pages on next morning / day.

NOTE: You may need to short press “Alt” key on your keyboard in order to see browser main menu bar

Most user friendly internet web browsing session can be saved and restored by web browser Opera, because Opera have build-in session manager feature that allows you to save and restore browsing sessions very quick and easy. To save internet web browsing session in Opera web browser just click "file" menu --> "Sessions" --> "Save this session" and give name of this session. This will save your internet web browsing session not only for active Opera window but from all open Opera windows. If you want to save just web pages open in tabs of active Opera window check “Only save active window” check box. To restore some of previously saved internet browsing sessions just click on "File" menu --> "Sessions" and then click name of browsing session you want to restore. To delete session that is not needed anymore from sessions list use "session manager"

Saving internet web browsing session in Internet Explorer(IE), Firefox(FF) and safari is not so user friendly as with Opera browser, because they have not build-in session manager feature, but it is still very easy and I think even more comfortable because gives you better control. Saving and restoring browser session in these 3 browsers is done in similar way
To save internet web browsing session of active web browser window in
- IE click on Favorites menu --> “Add current tabs to favorites”
- FF click oh Bookmarks menu --> Bookmark all tabs or right click any tab and from popup menu click Bookmark All Tabs
- Safari click on Bookmarks menu --> “Add bookmark for these N tabs” (N in number of open tabs).

Leave main favorites / bookmarks folder as folder where new group will be created. That will allows you to find saved sessions more quickly.
Then Enter name for this session that will be used as favorite’s folder name where will be stored all web pages from browser tabs of active browser window. I suggest you to use prefix Session for easy recognition of stored sessions among other bookmarks For example you can enter name like this: “Session1” or “Session universities list” (without quotes of course).
Click save to create new group inside favorites / bookmarks menu and to fill it with bookmarks to web pages open in current browser window. If you need to save web pages opened in other web browser windows you will need to save them one by one.

To restore internet web browsing session in IE, FF or Safari open favorites / bookmarks pane (pane and not menu) then right click name of session group you want to load and from pop-up menu click:
- IE “Open In Tab Group”
- FF “Open All In Tabs”
- Safari “Open In Tabs”

That is all. It need a bit more explanation than in Opera browser case, but is as simple and easy as it.

To delete saved custom browser session, just open favorites / bookmarks pane, right click browser session name tou want to delete and from pupup menu click delete. You can also delete custom browser session by select its name and then hit "Del" key on keyboard.

To manage sessions in Internet Explorer(IE), Firefox(FF) and Safari just open favorites/bookmarks pane, pin it if required, expand session groups you want to manage and drag and drop shortcuts between sessions, delete shortcuts from session groups or add shortcuts from favorites/bookmarks tree to desired session group. To do that you can use drag and drop or right mouse click popup menus

This is WHQL driver I modded/modified to work with Asus P5B MB ( AD1988A ). Diver works on Windows Vista and Windows 7, 32bit and 64bit.
Because driver is modified to works with AD1988A chip, when you run driver setup Windows warns you that driver is not certified. This is not true! Driver is WHQL signed and you can check this in device manager driver tab, after you install it. In Windows Vista was possible to load unsigned driver but on Windows 7 drivers that are not signed does not load. Because driver binaries of this driver are not modified they are WHQL signed and after driver is installed it loads as any other signed driver, without any problems.
This SoundMAX BlackHawk driver works much better than latest original SoundMAX driver for Windows 7 (SoundMAX ver. 610X6585), because sound quality of BlackHawk driver is much better and also BlackHawk have not problems with sound of front panel headphones when it is configured as 5.1/7.1 and you paly 6 channels or stereo sound
There are one thing you must know when you install SoundMAX BlackHawk audio driver on Windows Vista or Windows 7. When driver is installed all other channels volume except volume of left and right front speakers are set to 0 and after you configure it as 5.1/7.1 channel sound system you should set volume for all channels in order to listen sound from them. You can adjust each channel volume level from Windows sound settings or from SoundMAZ BlackHawk panel options. From SoundMAX BlackHawk panel options you can do that by opening speakers section and then to click on Regroup button to set all channels to same sound volume level
To get clear sound you may need to lower sound level by lowering equalizer sliders for preset you use.
To have sound play of all of your speakers on 4.1 / 5.2 / 7.1 sound systems, when you play stereo sound, you need to enable sonic focus effects with this button

Watch this video about SoundMAX BlackHawk features and settings running on Windows 7

There is also available SoundMax driver for windows XP I have modded/ modified to add DTS functionality support for Asus P5B motherboards / AD1988A

You can get this driver from this link:

How to add and manage browser favorites easily using drag and drop
related to most used browsers: IE7, IE6, FF3, Safari 3, Opera 9

All web browsers have a way for adding web sites / pages in favories list, but in all of them adding favorites in this way is very inconvenient especially when you have large favorites list containing a big number of folders.
However there is a very easy and comfortable way to add favorites in such a big list using drop and drag.
To add some site in favorites web links in your browser do the following:
1. go to web page you want to add in favorites list of your browser
2. open favories pane / bar of your browser that you usualy use to open already existing favotites link / bookmark
3. browse to folder / category you want to store this page.
4. If required create new subfolde / subcategory
5. While page you want to bookmark / add to favorites is open usinf mouse drag icon displayed at left side of address bar and drop it over folder / category you opened in step 3 or step 4. If you preffer you can drag browser tab instead of address bar icon.
That is all. Now web page is included in browser's bookmarks / favorites.

To manage favorites / bookmarks easily using drag and drop:
1. open favories pane / bar of your browser that you usualy use to open already existing favotites link / bookmark
2. Use drag and drop to arange bookmarks / favorite links and categorys / folders. If you prefer you can also use cut and paste to move favorites / bookmarks instead to drag them

Add folder to Favorites folders in Windows Vista
Favorite Links in Vista Windows Explorer

In Windows Vista you can add any folder you want to favorites folders list(called Favorite Links) to make it easy to access from Windows explorer window.
To add folder / directory to favorites folders list that is located above folder / directory tree at left pane of Windows explorer, open Windows Explorer, then browse to folder /directory you want to add as favorite folder / directory and drag it with mouse to favorite folders list and drop it there. Now you have quick access to this folder / directory and it is not necessary to browse a lot of folders and sub folders to reach it, because you can click it right from favorite folders list.
When folder is already added to Favorites Links you can drag and drop any file or folder over it to copy or move it into that folder.
For example if you add your flash drive to Favorites Links, you will be able to copy or move any file or folder to it easy with drop and drag.
If you add youe optical drive burner you will be able to set files and folders for burning by gragging and dropping them over burner icon located in Favorites Links.
You can use this technique for any other suitable drives like zip drive, jaz dive, floppy drive blueray drive and so on.

Good Memory For Stable System

RAM that will run without problems on any MB must be compliant to JEDEC standard for DDR2 / DDR3.
Most important properties of JEDEC RAM are:
- voltage: 1.5V for DDR3 / 1.8V for DDR2
- on-die-termination (ODT) design
- 64Mx8bits for 1GB modules in FBGA / 128Mx8bits for 2GB modules in FBGA

Good RAM has not heat sink because supplied with standard voltage it is not hot.
ODT ensures stable errorless operation on high frequencies

RAM that is supplied with 2.0V or more and has heat sink is only for experienced over clock enthusiasts because do not comply with JEDEC. It is over clocked and causes boot problems, unstable system run and low performance.
Always buy JEDEC compliant RAM if you want to build stable running system with good performance.
Standard RAM will run without problems on all MBs no matter it is not included in QVL

Running Windows in AHCI/RAID1 mode

If by any reason you can't supply hdd controller drivers to windows install, but you want to use AHCI or RAID1(mirrored) mode you can do the following steps:
1. Set HDD controller in IDE mode
2. Install windows without need of HDD controller drivers
3. When windows installation is complete while in IDE mode, install HDD controller drivers required to run in AHCI/RAID mode. (get latets drivers from manifacturer web site).
4. Reboot, and wait until you get message that your new hardware is installed and you need to reboot. This can take about 5-10 minutes
5. Reboot and wait 5-10 minutes after windows is loaded to be sure there are not other driver install messages.
6. Reboot, go in bios and set AHCI or RAID1(mirrored) mode

This will not work for RAID0 or other RAID configuration that increase speed!

How to register / set / install 32bit codec on Windows x64

In oreder to work on windows codecs needs to be registered into the system first.

You can register codecs by using Microsoft register server regsvr32 that comes with Windows OS.

You may want to register a codec manually using regsvr32 if codec have not installer or in case when installer failed to register 32 bit codec on Windows x64.

In case you want to update codec that is already registered on the system with most current one, you can just overwrite codec file, but you need to do it when codec is not in use (close all programs that may use the codec you want to update).

To register 32bit codec on Windows x64 you need to execute regsvr32.exe by specifying full path to it. Registering 32bit codec on Windows x64 is doing by calling regsvr32.exe from sysWOW64 folder, but not from system32 folder!

For example to register codec file named videocodec.ax located in folder Program Files\Media Codecs on drive C you need to open Command Prompt or Run dialog and to type the following comand:

C:\Windows\sysWOW64\regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\Media Codecs\videocodec.ax"

Please note that text after regsvr32.exe is quoted. This is required because text contains white spaces. If path have not white spaces, quotes are not mandatory.
